Working closely with the artist, mouldCAM was able to develop an engineered solution that delivered both the artistic intent as well as a robust sculpture . In this case, cast aluminium and a highly resilient paint system were chosen.
ELLIPSOIDAL SCULPTURE Look closely. This giant 36 meter long roadside sculpture is actually a series of 24 green, blue and white modular ellipsoids – the largest 5 meters high - created in fiber reinforced polymer using a 5-axis CNC milling machine and reassembled onsite.
HALO A lightweight 12 meter wide carbon fiber ring attached to a 6 meter long arm sits atop a 13 meter high tilted mast. The sculpture’s fluid, rhythmic movements as it rotates on a ceramic bearing the size of a marble are testimony to the engineering miracles of composite technology.
HAMER HALL A series of stalactite light columns made from Fiber Reinforced Polymer and coated in gold filigree provide stunning architectural lighting shafts in this major City Arts Centre redevelopment, leaving the impression of a dazzling underground cave.
IAN THORPE AQUATIC CENTRE An architect’s vision of a unique wave-form roof over an award winning Aquatic Centre became reality when mouldCAM created a solution using a series of repeatable composite molds to shape the piloti arched concrete support pillars.
MOUNTAINS, VALLEYS, CAVES The smooth painted outer surface of this sculpture was custom mixed to reflect the artist’s vision of abstract valleys and troughs, contrasting with an undulating sub-core engineered using 5-axis CNC technology.
POLAR BEARS Giant fiberglass polar bears coated in a ‘lipstick red’ polyurethane proved an exhibition favourite at an iconic Modern Art Gallery, showcasing the potential of CNC to create shapes and structures with an endless, join-less FRP skin not possible through conventional materials.
RMIT Based on a design reminiscent of Penrose tiles, this complex façade was designed and engineered entirely in 3D. CNC-cut tooling combined with GRP construction delivered a perfect translation of shape. Its vivid green gloss finish has earned it the nickname ‘Green Brain’.
SHORT SHELTER Working from artist sketches and models, mouldCAM developed a 3D concept for this beautiful riverside shelter. A series of blade shapes, manufactured in composite laminate, were engineered to follow the load lines and allowed us to achieve a complex profile that tapers in thickness as it curves.
DANISH YACHT Highly accurate CNC tooling meant Espen Oeino’s original 3D design for this luxury 38m super yacht was manufactured with such precision that little fairing was required; the weight savings helping ensure the boat met its target speed objective of 50 knots per hour.
HODGDON Unique ‘direct to mold’ CNC surfaces for Hodgdon’s full custom tender series provide a cost effective manufacturing solution that balances practical issues of engineering and performance with design and aesthetics.
